Izmir Presentation
Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey with a total land area of 12.762 km2 and a population of more than three million people. This city, which carries great significance as one of Turkey’s most important socio-economic and cultural centres, also has within its borders the biggest Gulf to be found along the country’s Aegean coast.
Izmir is said to have derived its name from Smyrna, the beautiful queen of the Amazons, the legendary female warriors. Excavations have revealed that the earliest settlement in Izmir was founded in the 3rd Millennium B.C. at present-day Bayrakli.
Having long enjoyed a reputation as a cosmopolitan and cultural city, Izmir thrives in art and culture. The Izmir Cultural Centre hosts opera, ballet and music performances. Every year the city holds the Izmir International Fair and Turkish Festival which invites both international and Turkish artists to perform at venues throughout the city.
The Aegean Region is the most active and important area for the shipping sector and port operations. Agriculture plays an important role in the Aegean Region’s economy. However, industry is the most advanced sector in the region. Consequently, industrial products have a great share in foreign trade. Izmir is the leading centre for the economy of the Aegean Region.
